The actual ship is a car/passenger ferry that sails between Nova Scotia and the island of Newfoundland in Canada. It measures approximately 587 feet in length and carries 370 cars and 1200 passengers It has been in service since 1990. After seeing the ship for the first time I could see that it would make a most impressive model and a real challenge to build. The fact that I sail on the Smallwood every year allowed me to take numerous pictures of the detail that I wished to include in the model. Some of the finer detail on the model include wipers on wheelhouse windows, deck furniture, light fixtures and although can only be seen if you look closely, simulated weld marks are shown where decks plates were joined. Ladders and stairways were all handcrafted in plastic. The model was built to a metric scale of 1/100, which relates to 1/96 in imperial measure and measures approximately 72 inches in length. It is painted in actual Marine Atlantic colors with the exception of the deck green which I mixed myself. |
