The Glennon was my first scratchbuilt all plastic project. The model was built in 1/96 scale and measured approx 48 inches in length. It was based on plans by Alan B Chesley of the Glennon. Detail for armament was obtained from ordnance pamphlets obtained from Floating Dry-dock. In 1989 an article I submitted on construction methods was published in Scale Ship Modeler. At the time not much was being published on the use of plastic card as a material. The close up pictures demonstrate the detail that can be produced when working with plastic. As any modeler knows we have to continually come up with ways to improvise. The floater nets, which can be seen in the close-up, were simulated by using round cocktail toothpicks, cut to length and then threaded. The 40mm quad Bofors gun consisted of approximately 100 individual pieces for each mount. Photo etch gun sights were purchased and added to the detail. Recoil spring was simulated with wound craft wire.
The lines of the Gearing Class destroyer lend itself to a fine looking model. |
